About Industrial Engineering

Industrial Engineering

Industrial engineering is a profession which aims to improve the efficiency of manufacturing and services via the integration of engineering, mathematics, economics, and management to improve the efficiency of manufacturing and services. Industrial engineering generally focuses on effectiveness, utility, compatibility, quality, accountability and continuous profiteering of high quality products and services. Industrial engineering actually started during the Industrial Revolution and evolved later on. The first faculty for industrial engineering was established in the state of Pennsylvania, USA. In the 1930s a great matter of focus was implemented on industrial engineering due to the Great Depression and the Second World War.

Through the 1950s and 1980s, there was an increasing emphasis on calculative and quantitative devices, quality of working life (QWL), total quality management (TQM) and intensive environmental interaction (IEI) in institutions. Since 1980, the needs of companies have shifted towards trade improvement, competition, efficiency, utility, customer centering, marketing and supply management and so, after decades of industrial engineering in Iran, with a lot of effort to better understand the importance of the matter, industrial engineering, to Iranians, is now quite known and has gained much needed recognition. Fortunately in recent years, the demand for both admission and employment of the industrial engineers has created a suitable working condition in higher level organizations with the program being at the top five priorities of university entrants in engineering. A great number of IE graduates are now employed in high level managerial posts in the country and also, engage in research and teaching in more prestigious universities both inside and outside Iran. Many more hold vital posts in important companies of Europe and America.

About Industrial Engineering

The advancements of science and the fast pace of technological change and the focus needed to be implemented on socio-humane issues over the last century led to classical engineering sciences such as Chemistry, Construction, Mechanics and Electrics not being reliable enough in the matters of manufacturing and service providing organizations and in order to recuperate, a combination of various managerial, mathematical, economical and engineering sciences resulted in the creation of the new program of industrial engineering. Generally, the activities regarding this discipline revolve around the design and improvement of systems which are created through the contexture of equipment, machinery, material, individuality and investments. It uses analytical and engineering sciences with managerial techniques through mathematics and computers with the aim of predicting, analyzing and      carrying out the best solutions. In this program, matters such as system design and environmental coordination, production planning, stocks supervision and organizational revenue improvement are introduced.

The activities regarding industrial engineering can be summarized into the following categories:

  • Improvement through operationalized research including linear and nonlinear or dynamic design, simulation, integer numbers and analytical decision making and system analysis, the possible models and networking theories.
  • Design and selection of suitable production processes.
  • Design and selection of devices and equipment.
  • Designing physical facilitations including units' deployment, machinery, equipment, transportation and designing of the installations of storage units and warehouses for products and materials.
  • Design and development of planning systems and distribution management, production services, quality control, repairing and maintaining factories, project management and other related activities.
  • Creating expenditure control systems which include budget and expense analysis. Technical and economic analysis and investment alternatives.
  • Developing information and control in management.
  • Occupational analysis development.
  • Establishing and designing of income management while handling job bonuses and services.
  • Creating scales and measurements of workplace functionality of employees through measurement and assessment.
  • Observing function and reliability of systems and employees.
  • Planning and developing human resources.
  • Economic planning, financial management and prognosis.

As seen also today, industrial engineering aims to solve problems through a general and systematic approach. A remark must be made that most systems today, due to their vastness, complexity and interrelations, cannot simply be analyzed. Therefore, industrial engineering requires computerized and software knowledge to both design and maintain these systems, especially from a managerial and decision making standpoint. Also, in systems such as CAM/CAD and functional movement systems (FMS) and robots, the managerial necessities have opened a vast horizon for industrial engineers in order to solve economical and technical difficulties of organizations. In short, industrial engineering has had a substantial effect of the fulfillment of expectations and requirements of companies and organizations. Needless to say, that an industrial engineer can not only seek occupation in the manufacturing sector but also in others including banks, insurance, hospitals, and public or private organizations. The programs of the Department of English of the Technical Faculty of Touyserkan, have been designed compatible with the most prestigious universities and engineering faculties both in and outside the country in order to fulfill the industrial needs of the country both for now and the future. This program aims to prepare the students at first with the general courses of engineering, so that they are familiarized with the general concepts of engineering sciences and then, as a second step, educates the students in their own professional courses of industrial engineering to fulfill the need the country has of an experienced workforce.

To be concise, industrial engineers are in the heart of the systems which are essential today for manufacturing and services. Furthermore, from airlines to retailers, hospitals to banks, communication companies to international transportation ones, in every socio-economic and generally every complex system including workforce, information and technology, industrial engineers develop solutions for functional improvement of the systems.

Today, there are vast occupational possibilities for industrial engineers and those possibilities continue to expand with the day to day advancement of marketing and developing systems. The graduates of this discipline are now at work in fields such as manufacturing, services, transportations, sanitation and treatment, financial systems, energy, etc.
